Minneapolis News: Textbook Rental

Kindle Fire or Nook Color?!?

I am a college student looking for an e-reader to get textbooks on. I am looking at the Kindle Fire and the Nook Color (because I want one with color.) They both will cost $200, so the money isn’t in the equation. So what it really comes down to is 1.which will have more options for textbooks? 2.which will offer rental textbooks for cheaper? (if the nook even offers rental) and 3.which is overall better?
if anyone has any sort of advice or can help me at all I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Hi, Rachel, I’d recommend Nook Tablet (which is Nook Color 2) instead without a doubt, it’s a class above Kindle Fire. One should do own research and read online reviews on Kindle Fire before ordering one – there’s a lot of complains from people who got the device that many Kindle Fire units have faulty Wi-Fi and people have a lot of issues connecting to internet. Also, Amazon’s own web site has hundreds (over 700 already) of reviews of Kindle Fire’s new owners that gave it 1 or 2 star reviews because of choppy/laggy experience they got from this underpowered device. All pro reviewers on the web clearly voiced that Nook Tablet is a much better device with superior performance compared to Kindle Fire. Nook Tablet has been getting rave reviews and it is the best device in it’s class. It’s got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life, the best screen, double the RAM and space for apps/photoes/movies, microSD slot and a microphone for Skype (not on kindle), physical volume controls on the side (not on Kindle). Also, it is $224 if sign up for Barnes & Noble membership.
Neither Nook nor Kindle handles eTextbooks well however Barnes and Noble has something for a regular PC or MAC including a laptop or a desktop. An eTextbook is a digital, downloadable, version of a physical textbook. It can be read on your PC and Mac with B&N’s free NOOKstudy application. An eTextbook will look exactly like the physical version so you will see the same graphs, charts, drawings etc. The best part is that you can read your eTextbook anywhere that you bring your computer without needing the internet! And, you have the option to purchase or rent it depending on your needs.
